A Noteworthy Nod for Navy

Source: Adroyt

JULY 5, 2018 -Saxon Henry

We’ve been coming across such a deluge of fascinating shades of dark blue, we thought we’d collect some of our favorite navy home décor products from the past six months in one place. We’ve tapped rich examples from HeimtextilMaison & ObjetParis Déco-OffHigh Point MarketSalone del MobileICFFCoverings, and Dallas Market. The image above is of the Grand Canyon pattern that debuted in the Pierre Frey showroom during Paris Déco-Off in January, one of the most dramatic introductions we saw.

Was it really seven months ago when we were winging our way to Frankfurt, Germany, to see the new offerings at the Heimtextil show? My, how time flies! We take a bit of a look back for our featured fabric from the show, a Baroque-inspired pattern by Italian manufacturer S & B Silk & Beyond.

RHAPSODY IN BLUE AT PARIS DÉCO-OFF

Along with the Grand Canyon pattern introduced by Pierre Frey, shown at the lead of this post, we spotted super soft fabrics by De Le Cuona (above) and elegant jewel-toned releases by Nobilis (below) during Paris Déco-Off, a sprawling fabric show that takes over the Left Bank each January.

Nobilis is always one of our go-to showrooms for luxury introductions each time we attend Paris Déco-Off because the Rue Bonaparte atelier is where we trek to see French elegance personified.

One of the most festive events we attended while we were in Paris for Déco-Off and Maison & Objet was the debut of Timothy Corrigan’s collection of wallpapers for Fromental, which includes the Oceanic pattern in the Indigo Sea colorway, shown above, and the Broardlands pattern below in a Starry Night colorway. Being in a gracefully designed Parisian apartment, particularly one decorated by Corrigan, was an inspiration.

BLUE VELVET AT MAISON & OBJET

When we spotted Pols Potten’s Cosy Armchair in a sexy navy velvet at M&O, we couldn’t help but fall in love with it. Having the legs covered in velvet is that finishing detail that makes such a luxurious difference.

THE MOODY BLUES AT HIGH POINT MARKET

During High Point Market in April, we were thrilled to see Xander Noori being celebrated, as his refined sense of style deserves attention. The Xander Noori Collection for Theodore Alexander that debuted in a string of whispery quiet paneled rooms included his Ethos Chair in a lovely navy.

Also in the Suites at Market Square, New Moon Rugs debuted the Terrasse carpet in Ebony blue during High Point Market in April. Swimming in an abstract pattern of irregular shapes and colors, the rug reads like a broken tile-like mosaic. Woven using a blend of Tibetan wool, Chinese silk and natural nettle fibers to create a unique texture and overall shine.

KIND OF BLUE AT SALONE DEL MOBILE

Though the dusty blue of sp01 Design’s Anita high-back armchair that was introduced during Salone del Mobile in Milan is lighter than our other picks, all you need to do is ask an artist to step navy back a shade or two and you have this lovely hue. Besides, the form of the seat is the closest you can come to a hug from a piece of furniture. It’s also available with a legs in metal.

ONCE IN A BLUE MOON AT ICFF

A glowing example of artistry, the Hoop pendant by Zero Lighting, which is available in North America through Global Lighting, is the sheer embodiment of “Once in a Blue Moon.” We’re crazy about the fixture that had its American debut at ICFF, which is no surprise given it was designed by the uber-talented Front Design Studio, a duo that turns out one sophisticated design after another. It comes in other colors, but this is our fave.

M2L brought the Probber Collection to ICFF, which included the Deep Tuft. This is a vintage piece reborn, as the original was designed by Harvey Probber in 1972. It’s shown on the company’s website in a vibrant red but we spotted it in a deep navy at the show.

Hush by IQ Commercial, distributed in the US by WakaNine, is like a workable puzzle of a light shade. The creation, which comes in twelve colors and three sizes, brings a warmth even to the most modern rooms. It was an enigmatic standout at ICFF because it is also an acoustic marvel, thus the name “Hush”!

INTO THE BLUE AT COVERINGS

If you’ve followed us long enough, you’ll know we’re history buffs. When we spotted the above pattern in the British Ceramic Tile booth at Coverings, we were immediately drawn to it. We asked Gary Bailey, the global sales manage, about the new pattern and he told us it was drawn from an antique design found in the Victoria and Albert Museum archives, which they go into every year to actualize new designs in their V&A Collection. Lucky ducks! You can see all of their V&A offerings on the organization’s website.

New Ravenna brought their Tanzanian Squiggle pattern, a hand-cut glass mosaic shown in Blue Spinel and Iolite Sea Glass™ with Moonstone jewel glass, to Coverings. Designed by J. Banks Design, we love the name almost as much as we love the beauty of the pattern! The hints of navy provide the depth that are a hallmark of gracefully actualized mosaics.

SONG SUNG BLUE DURING DALLAS MARKET

Currey & Company has long been known for their lamps and they offer so many shades of blue, there is truly something for everyone. We tapped the Kolor table lamp, a buxom beauty in a deep vibrant blue to the right in the image above, as our pick from the luminous showroom in the Dallas Market Center last month.

Aidan Gray has introduced a lovely line of tables made of ox and buffalo bone in an array of bright colors. This royal blue side table was one of the most beautifully conceived products we found in their showroom during Dallas Market.

Blue Mirage is a painting displayed in the Erdos + Ko Home showroom in the Dallas Market Center. The combination of blue and gold makes this a rich composition; the touches of purple and minty green add complexity to the painting. We could certainly live with that!

Barclay Butera’s classically designed living room set created for Castelle Luxury, was center stage in Designer’s Patioduring Dallas Market. The luxe offering suits the well-appointed loggia to a tee. The patterning on the frames are made even more timeless in the blue and white color combination he chose for the weather-worthy set. Sadly for us mere mortals, the showroom is to-the-trade only.

The C. Maddox & Company showroom held so many offerings in dark blues, it was difficult to narrow down our picks. We finally decided upon a pair of CR Laine Marcoux swivel chairs in a Pounce sapphire fabric and a one-of-a-kind drinks table made of glass and resin by artist TJ Garis. The latter was our crystal blue persuasion, after all!

In Dallas to moderate a panel discussion on textiles that featured Scott Kravet, Aviva Stanoff and Tamara Matthews-Stephenson, we dished about fabrics past, present and future. Tamara was showing off some of Root Cellar Designs’latest releases, such as the Blue Heron pattern in a white and marine colorway above.

Aviva Stanoff shared this remarkable photo of herself in Morocco in a drenching shade of blue that you’ll find showing up in her product lines quite frequently.

Our proof? Just last week, we spotted her shots on Instagram documenting her photo shoot in the desert during which she was swathed in a symphony of ombre in deep and powdery blues.

You can look for Kravet to bestow a regal bearing on any room in which this homage to the queen holds court. Now that’s what we call a royal blue!

We’re also giving shout-outs to a few excellent events where new releases perfected the blues during the past several months. ABC Carpet & Home launched the second edition of OBEETEE’S “Proud to be Indian” Series designed by the founders of the fashion house Abraham and Thakore in late May. David and Rakesh, the founders of the brand, are shown above in front of the Sanganer carpet during the event. Their designs are now available through ABC Carpet & Home.

Dedar just opened the company’s first New York City showroom in the D&D Building. The company debuted some incredible fabrics during Paris Deco-Off, and we’re not being hyperbolic when we say the Amoir Libre Collection, shown above in a Moirè pattern in luxuriant waves of blue they call Orient, makes us swoon!

We hope you enjoyed our blue print of the most fabulous shades of navy we have found so far this year.
